The book is intended to give students and the general reader a brief outline of English literature with sufficient details to whet their appetite for the novels, plays and poems presented in the historical context. The thirteen centuries from 700 A.D. to 1995 are divided in twelve periods, each of which is introduced by a sketch of the historical background, a synoptic survey of English and European political, social and cultural events, and a characterisation of the book market of the period. A select bibliography, specified according to the various aspects of each period and occasionally commented on, leads on to more specialized secondary literature. |
